How to read a Resistor Color Code

Through-hole resistors use painted color bands to indicate their resistance value and tolerance. Because components are too small for printed text, this color-coding system is an international standard.

  • 4-Band Resistors: The first two bands represent the significant digits. The third band is the multiplier (number of zeros to add). The fourth band is the tolerance.
  • 5-Band Resistors: Used for higher precision. The first three bands are significant digits, the fourth is the multiplier, and the fifth is the tolerance.
